Funde existieren in beiden Hemisphären.

Lagenaria siceraria,
(...siehe deutsche Version...)
Vernacular names: Flaschenkürbis (Deu.), bottle gourd, calabash gourd,
white-flowered gourd (En). Calebasse, courge bouteille (Fr). Indonesia: labu
air, labu putih, kukuk (West Java). Malaysia: labu botol. Papua Neu Guinea:
sel kambang, botol wara. Philippines: upo (Tagalog), tabungao (Ilocano),
kalubay (Bisaya). Kambodscha: khlôôk. Laos: namz taux. Thailand:

The origin of the bottle gourd is possibly in tropical Africa and nowadays
can be found all over in the tropics. Even here in the temperate zone of
Europe, the plant grows well in areas where wine is cultivated. It can handle
low temperatures but doesn't tolerate frost causing the plant's death. In
South-East Asia, gourds are grown up to 1600m sealevel.
The fruit, the bottle gourd in its sense, could have been drifted by ocean
currents to the coasts of America. Archeologic objects with an age of more
than 10.000 years exist in both hemispheres, America and Africa/ Asia.
The young shoots and fruits of cultivars without bitter taste are estimated as a cooked or fried vegetable. The seeds of bottle gourds are widely known as a snack; its seed's oil is in use as cooking oil to a certain extent.
The green fruits are transformed to a syrup against chest aches.

The inexhaustible diversity of gourds... |
|
The most frequent disease of gourd-plants: |
The ripe, dried fruits with a shell hard as wood can be used in manifold ways for different containers, for making hats, musical instruments, floaters for fishing nets and a variety of decorative things of art.
The men of Papua New-Guinea estimate the necks of bottle gourds as a
protection-sheath ("Holim") for their penis.
Cultivars being resistant and robust are used in Japan as a root-basis for
melon plants, watermelons and salad cucumbers.
In kite-building the dried fruits of special sorts (for ex. var. "Miniature-Bottle", "Green Apple") are used for making the famous Chinese Nantong kite-whistles; also for making pigeon flutes (also var. "Miniature Bottle") See gourd-preparation/ -drying
