Eine süße Paprika-Art mit hängenden Früchten. |

Sweet pepper plant with hanging fruits. |
Vernacular names: Chili-Pfeffer, scharfer Paprika (die scharfen Sorten), süßer Paprika (die milden Sorten) (Deu); Capsicum pepper, chilli, bird pepper, bird's eye chilli (En). Hot pepper, chile, paprika, sweet pepper, bird pepper (Am). Piment, poivron (Fr). Indonesia: lombok, cabai, cabai keriting, cabai rawit, cabai besar. Malaysia: cili, cili padi, cili api, cili sayur. Like the tomatoes Capsicum belong to the solanaceous plants (like tomato and potato)and has its origin in middle America (Capsicum annuum of Mexico) and South-America (Capsicum frutescens). The plants were spread around the whole old world in 16.th century by Spanish and Portuguese mariners; meanwhile the plant is cultivated on all continents.
In unripe condition, the paprika-fruits are green and become yellow or red when ripe.
Paprika its the spice most used in the world for making hot meals.
Here, for use in kite-building, this spice may be mentioned as a
curiosity:
On Bahamas Islands hot chili is added to household
glues used for kite-frames, in order to frighten away the cockroaches otherwise
eating the glue...
|
...the smallest are the hottest ones... |
Paprika is widely known as raw-eaten vegetable, or in hot version mixed into
the meals fresh or dried; preserved in cans etc. The red colour and flavour
extracts are widely used in food industry for Ginger Ale, hot sauces, ketchups
etc.
In the last time, the alkaloid responsible for the hot taste, the "capsaicin"
(max. 1% of dry weight) is used for medical purposes for chronical pain
soothening. The vegetable has high contents of vitamin A and C.
The world production is estimated to about 9Mio. tons.
